The ingathering of exiles is a major challenge facing the State of Israel. The Declaration of Independence and the Law of Return grant every Jew the right of Aliya (ascent) to Israel. Since 1881-82, the First Aliya, many immigration waves have contributed to the growth and development of the Jewish Yishuv and later the State of Israel.

The Song of Songs is perhaps the most sublime love poem ever written. Many Jews regard this book, attributed to King Solomon, as a conversation between a nation and its Lord, and as an expression of the Lord's deep and eternal love for Israel. Some take the poems at Face value, as expressions of the innocent human love of shepherds and shepherdesses in the bosom of nature. Al agree on the beauty of its poetry, which reflects a deep love of the landscape, flora and fauna of Israel.

The Knesset is Israel's legislature, and its laws form the basis for the nation's legal system. Ancient Jewish law is one of the sources applied to interpret the laws of the State. Israel does not yet have a complete written constitution, and some of its laws are still derived from British Mandatory (1920-1948) legislation, and even pre-1917 Ottoman law. However, there are "Basic Laws" that cover a broad variety of subjects, such as the State, presidency, parliament, courts, government, army and equality of gender. The court system consists of the Supreme Court, district and peace courts, as well as courts of special jurisdiction, such as local, labor, traffic and juvenile courts, as well as military and religious courts. Judges are appointed by the president of the State.

The "Revolt and Heroism" coin of 1993 remembers the Warsaw ghetto uprising that took place fifty years earlier in 1943, as well as other feats of Jewish heroism later during the Holocaust, at Vilna, Kovno, Krakow, Bialystok and other ghettos. The first concentration camp uprising was at Auschwitz, followed by insurrections at Treblinka and Sobibor.

The "Binding of Isaac" coin is the first in the Biblical Art series. In this moving story related in Genesis 22, Abraham, father of the Jewish people, demonstrated his faith in the Lord by showing his readiness to sacrifice his only son Isaac. Rembrandt van Rijn, the most famous Dutch painter, captured in this work dating from 1634 the moving moment when the Patriarch Abraham lifts the knife over his bound son, and is stopped by the Lord's Angel. The coin was minted in The Netherlands, completing an artistic circle. |

From the dawn of history, the Jewish people have had a great influence on the development of medical science. The greatest Jewish philosopher, Moses Maimonides, was a physician. Many personalities in the Zionist Movement were themselves medical doctors. Israel has achieved high standards in medicine, development and application of advanced medical technology and research. Israel is also on the forefront of the antibiotics industry.

In May 1945 the Second World War came to an end. The Holocaust, during which one third of the world's Jewish population perished, is well documented. Less widely known is the fact that over 1 million Jews fought in Allied armies, the Jewish Brigade, the Soviet Red Army, the partisans and the ghetto undergrounds.

Fifteen years after premier Menachem Begin and president Anwar Sadat singed the Egypt-Israel peace treaty under the auspices of US president Jimmy Carter, Israel's Yitzhak Rabin, Jordan's King Hussein and US president Bill Clinton gathered in October 1994 near the adjoining port cities of Eilat and Aqaba to sign the second peace treaty between Israel and one of its Arab neighbors. Prior to Israel-Jordan peace, the relationship between both countries has always been enigmatic. For decades a popular Israeli saying was, that "we don't know which will be the first Arab country to make peace with Israel, but Jordan will be the second." The enigmatic relationship between both nations goes back to 1918, when Emir Feisal, King Hussein's great-grandfather met with Chaim Weismann, resulting in the Feisal-Weizmann agreement of 1919. Later, in early May 1948, days before the outbreak of Israel's war of independence, Golda Meir traveled to Amman to meet King Abdullah, Hussein's grandfather. And during the reign of King Hussein it was common knowledge that the Hashemite monarch met in secret several times with Israeli prime ministers, ministers and other high officials in order to reach peace. After the peace treaty, the relationship between both countries has mostly been positive. Israeli companies and manufacturing industries started to invest in Jordan and the exploitation of Dead Sea resources is done with mutual consultation.

This coin in the Biblical Flora and Fauna Series features the fox (Vulpes) and the grape vine (Vitis). Both are native to the Holy Land. The fox is mentioned several times in the Bible in general and the Book Song of Songs in particular. The grape vine is maybe the most famous of all biblical plants, and together with its fruit, the grape and its fermented juice, wine, features prominently throughout biblical history. Wine plays a pivotal role in Jewish religion and rites.

"Then came two women unto the king. The one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house. This woman was delivered also. And this woman's child died in the night, because she overlaid it. And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom. And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead. But it was not my son, which I did bear. And the other woman said, Nay; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spake before the king. Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the other saith, Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living. And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king. And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other. Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it. Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof. And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of the Lord was in him, to do judgment."
The famous biblical story as related in the Book I Kings 3:16-28 (excerpts), is the motif of this Biblical Art coin. The scene on its obverse is based on a 13th century work taken from the book "Miscellany" by Rabbi David Kimhi (Radak), France, ca. 1280. |

Archaeological evidence indicates that a settlement existed within present-day Jerusalem, as far back as the 4th millennium BC, with permanent settlement dating back to 3000-2600 BC. According to the biblical account King David conquered the city from the Jebusites and established Jerusalem as the capital of the United Kingdom of Israel and Judah circa 1004 BC. According to several archaeologists, recent excavations lend credence to the biblical narrative. Based on archaeological evidence and the biblical account, 1996 was chosen to celebrate Jerusalem's third millennium.
On the reverse a decorative motif from the window grillwork of the palace of Jehoiakim is shown. In the silver Proof coin the digit "3", symbolizing Jerusalem's 3 millennia, features prominently. Its nominal value is 30 New Sheqalim, and it was minted in 3 troy ounces of pure silver, both a first in Israel numismatics. |

"For the horse of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his horsemen into the sea, and the Lord brought again the waters of the sea upon them; but the children of Israel went on dry land in the midst of the sea. And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances. And Miriam answered them, Sing ye to the Lord, for he hath triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea" (Exodus 15:19-21).

Yitzhak Rabin, the first native-born prime minster of Israel, was born in 1922 in Jerusalem, the city he fought for in the War of Independence and liberated in the Six Day War. It was Jerusalem in which he was buried in 1995, in a section of the national Cemetery on Mount Herzl reserved for the nation's leaders. Yitzhak Rabin fought in the War of Independence, and was Chief of Staff of Israel's army during the 1967 Six-Day War. After leaving the military, Rabin became a national leader and statesman, culminating in two premierships. Throughout his political career, he was known for his personal integrity and straightforwardness, for which he was greatly respected. During his second time in the highest office, in the 1990s, he declared a change in national priorities and promised to achieve a peace arrangement. His long years as a soldier instilled in him a desire to bring peace to the Middle East in order to prevent further bloodshed and ensure a secure and better future. In October 1994 he signed a peace agreement with Jordan. Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated on November 4, 1995, at the end of a mass peace rally "Yes to Peace, No to Violence". Yitzhak Rabin was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994, for his bold efforts to bring peace to the Middle East, and is recognized as one of the great leaders of the 20th century.

"If I were to sum up the Basel congress in a single phrase, I would say, 'In Basel I created the Jewish State.' Was I to say this aloud, I would be greeted by universal laughter, but perhaps five years hence, in any case, certainly in fifty years, everyone will agree." Israel's 49th Anniversary of Independence coin celebrates 100 years of modern Zionism. Theodor Herzl, distressed by the upsurge in anti-Jewish hatred all over Europe, and deeply touched by the Dreyfus affair in Paris where he was stationed as a journalist, initiated the First Zionist Congress in Basel in 1897. Twenty years later, the Balfour Declaration was issued, fifty years after the First Zionist Congress, the United Nations would vote for the establishment of a Jewish homeland in part of the Land of Israel, and less than half a year later, on May 14, 1948, Herzl's prophecy became true. Very appropriately, Herzl is called the Visionary of the State of Israel.

The lion (Panthera leo) is not immediately associated with the Holy Land. However, the King of Beasts figures prominently in the Bible and on archaeological artwork. Two tangible evidences are the fact that the lion was the symbol of the Tribe of Judah, and the discovery at Megiddo in 1903 of the famed "Seal of Shema, Servant of Jerobeam", dating back to the 8th century BC. This archaeological gem graces the reverse of the 5 Lirot banknote of 1958 (Pick #31), and its stunning "Roaring Lion" motif graces the obverse of the 5 Lirot (KM # 90) and ½ Sheqel (KM # 109) coins. The author of this website adopted the "Shema Seal" as background image of all pages of the "SHEQEL" online catalog, and the "Roaring Lion" as its logo. The pomegranate (Punica granatum) is one of the seven species and also features prominently in the Bible.
The coin's reverse depicts a branch with two ripe pomegranates, as well as the biblical quote "piece of a pomegranate" (Song of Songs 4:3). |

"Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of the jubile to sound on the tenth [day] of the seventh month, in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land. And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout [all] the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family. A jubile shall that fiftieth year be unto you... (Leviticus 25:9-11). In 1998 Israel celebrated its fiftieth Anniversary of Independence. The motif of the coin commemorating this milestone is Israel's flag, a blue Star of David flanked by two blue lines on a white background.

Israel lies on one of the main "highways" that migratory birds travel twice annually, on their long flights between their summer residences in the lush temperate climes of Europe and their winter retreats in sub-Saharan Africa. Israel is a favorite twice-yearly resting and feeding stop for over 60,000 storks (Ciconia), a feast for birdwatchers. Also a familiar sight in Israel are majestic cypress trees (Cupressus sempervirens), sometimes towering as high as 40 meters (120 feet) into the air, dwarfing almost all other vegetation.
The reverse shows two cypresses, and the words "like a green fir tree" (Hosea 14:8). |

Portrayed on this coin's obverse n is Abraham, the lone shepherd, looking towards the stars, symbolizing constant divine presence in the lives of the faithful. The image captures the moment that the Lord informed him that he will be the patriarch of a great nation, comparing his offspring with the stars in heaven: "So Shall Thy Seed Be" (Genesis 15:1-6). When looking at this coin, it reminds us that the dramatic and inspirational events of the past are just as relevant now, in the era of a new millennium, as they were when they happened in the Holy Land thousands of years ago. The 21 stars on the coin allude to the start of the 21st century. |

This coin features the story of Joseph and his Brothers, as told in the Book Genesis (45:1-15). Joseph was the favorite son of his father Jacob. This and his dreams aroused the jealousy of his brothers. The coin portrays the transformation of jealousy into brotherly love. The row of sheaves on the top left-hand-side of the coin turns into hands reaching out to Joseph, shown in the lower part of the coin. The image of Joseph on the right hand side, alludes both to the beginning and end of the story. The depiction of Joseph as second to Pharoah, with the jewels, is a reminder of the Egyptian mural painting style. However, the striped robe reminds us of Joseph, the boy and dreamer. The tear in his eye symbolizes the deep emotions of Joseph as he identified his brothers. |
