The 53rd Anniversary coin honored all those dedicated people working in the field of education, and to the pupils and students persevering in their studies. The seeds of the pomegranate signify the values of education. The Stars of David represent Jewish values and history. The third row of symbols represents the different spheres of Higher Education in which Israel excels: (from left to right) science, electronic communications, archaeology, computers and agriculture. Hebrew, Arabic and Latin characters symbolize the pluralism of Israeli society and its goal in creating unity and harmony.

Rabbi Nachman of Bratzlav, the famous Hassidic Rabbi, used to say that there is nothing in the world without a melody. One can also say there is nobody who is not moved by any particular melody. Music, which is the most abstract form of art, has the greatest power of penetrating one's heart and soul. Music and song are mentioned many times in the Bible; Divine inspiration was transmitted through music; The Levites played the trumpets, David the lyre; The Prophets who came towards Saul played the lute, timbrel, pipe and lyre. The deep-rooted musical heritage is evident in Israel today, covering a complete spectrum from classical music to Jewish folk music. Israel is the home of many of the world's leading classical musicians and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra is world-famous.
The "Music" coin expresses the sweet, harmonic sounds of music, played by the orchestra, that have the power of captivating our senses. Its obverse depicts a montage of musical instruments.

To give wholeheartedly and not for the sake of receiving recompense, is the essence of volunteering. By dedicating Israel's 54th Anniversary coin to "Volunteering", the State of Israel expressed its appreciation and recognition of all devoted volunteers.

The design of this coin is composed of two hands joined together with a heart in the center, symbolizing the outstanding goodheartedness of volunteers. If one holds the coin at a certain angle, the hands together resemble two doves, a symbol of love and peace.

Over 4,000 years ago, mankind was united in love and peace in one place and spoke only one language. However, as the people became over-conceited and strove to achieve power, they decided to try and reach the sky, by building a tower, the Tower of Babel as it was named. At this moment, the utopian unity was to change for all time. The Lord frustrated their project by causing confusion in their communication. They started to speak different languages and became scattered all over the earth.

This coin encapsulates all languages and all peoples. On its obverse it shows a composition of the Hebrew verses in the Book of Genesis 11:1-9, which describe the building of the Tower of Babel. The verses are written in the shape of a tower, and not all are clearly eligible, alluding to the state of confusion and lack of communication among the people. The words themselves symbolize the central theme in the story of the Tower of Babel - Language. On the coin's reverse he inscriptions on the reverse are written concentrically, giving the impression of a view from above the tower.

In 1988, a three-stage "Shavit" Rocket with the "Ofeq 1" Satellite was launched from a Negev Desert launch pad. This event catapulted Israel into the small group of space-faring nations of the world, able to launch satellites into orbit.

The "Space Exploration" commemorative coins highlights Israel's achievements in space. Each coin displays the "Shavit" rocket on the obverse, and a different design on its reverse. On the 1 New Sheqel silver BU coin, the "Ofeq" satellite is depicted. On the 2 New Sheqalim silver proof coin appears the "Amos" satellite. The 10 New Sheqalim gold gold coin features the "Eros" satellite.
In February 2002, Israel's first astronaut, Ilan Ramon, entered space in the Columbia Space Shuttle. This coin is dedicated to Ilan Ramon and the other six astronauts who lost their lives in the Columbia tragedy. The coin's edge bears a Hebrew inscription in their memory.

This coin features one of the greatest love stories of the Bible, the story of Jacob and Rachel. Jacob worked hard for seven years for his uncle Laban and future father-in-law, in return for Rachel. However, after seven years, Laban deceived him and gave him Rachel's elder sister, Leah, as a wife. He had to work another seven years for his beloved Rachel. Jacob's perseverance and hard honest work, together with Rachel's outstanding comportment, are features in this story.

The coin's obverse has a tender and lyrical rendering of Jacob and Rachel. Their images face one another as they appear to float over the hills and sheep, the sheep of Laban, which Jacob tended for so many years.

This coin honors the Israeli Olympic delegation to the 2004 Athens Olympiad. In retrospect the 2004 Olympic Games would also be the pinnacle of Israel's achievements in windsurfing, a favorite pastime for many Israeli's aided by the favorable Eastern Mediterranean weather, a long coastline and good surfing conditions during much of the year. At the 2004 Athens Olympics, a surfer would be the first Israeli to win a gold medal.

The obverse of the coin depicts a series of windsurfers in the Red Sea, and its reverse a group of four windsurfers.

Football (soccer) has been popular in Israel for close to 100 years. In 1929 the national federation was accepted as a member of FIFA. The Israel National Team has participated in international activities since 1934, and regularly takes part in FIFA World Cup preliminary round matches. Israel plays in European competitions as a full member of UEFA. Symbolizing Israel's aspirations to live in peace with all its neighbors, the National team often includes a number of Arab players who compete, along with their Jewish countrymen, to bring success and pride to the State. The last time Israel played in World Cup finals, was in 1970 in Mexico, where the Israeli team reached the eighth final, only to be ousted at the flip of a coin.

The popular "Jacob and Rachel" 10 New Sheqalim gold coin (KM-376), dated 2003/5763, was followed approximately one year later by a small gold 1 New Sheqel coin, as part of an international "The Smallest Gold Coin" series.
To the surprise of delighted collectors who received this beautiful coin late 2004, a colossal error was found in the Arabic rendering of the word Israel, which was spelled ISRIL in Arabic script on the coin's reverse, instead of ISRA'IL, the correct spelling. The Dutch engravers at the Royal Netherlands Mint in Utrecht had simply goofed, and performed a vanishing act with the Arabic letter A in the middle of the word Israel, to the horror of the Bank of Israel and the Israel Government Coins and Medals Corporation. The IGCMC then frantically tried to halt the blunder coin's distribution, but a small quantity had already reached a few happy collectors in Israel.
After rounding up the outstanding supplies at their stores and franchise outlets all over Israel, the IGCMC could take stock and concluded that only 682 error coins had been sold to the public, almost entirely in Israel.
A new batch of coins with the correct Arabic spelling ISRA'IL was hastily ordered from the Dutch Mint, and towards April 2005 the new coins were distributed to collectors who did not yet receive their order. Bad luck for them, because the error coin has since become a hot collectors' item.

Life expectancy in Israel is among the highest in the world, pointing to achievements in fields such as health, welfare, etc. Longer life expectancy means an increase in the percentage of adults in the population, and it is clear that the world no longer belongs only to the young. Many older adults continue to enjoy good health and devote a portion of their leisure time to volunteer activities which contribute to society, the economy, and to culture. Volunteerism by those in the Golden Years supports important causes which benefit everyone.

The 57th Independence Day Coin commemorates the richness and creativity embodied in the Golden Years. The coin's obverse features an olive tree, which is characteristic of Israel and which is known to live for hundreds of years. This tree, with its strong roots, branches, and fruit has been chosen to represent the developed strength, vigor and creativity of our Senior citizens, relating to the verse "They shell still bring forth fruit in old age" (Psalms 92:14).

Naomi Shemer was known as "First Lady of Israeli Song". She was a prolific song writer and composer and expressed her profound love of the beautiful landscapes of Israel through song and poetry. She was awarded the Israel Prize in 1983. Her repertoire included hundreds of songs, the most famous of which was "Jerusalem of Gold", composed in 1967, coincidentally just before the Six Day War. The song became extremely popular and was translated into many different languages. "Jerusalem of Gold" caused much controversy after her death, when it became known that some of the lyrics had been copied from a Basque folk song, most probably unintentionally. Another song, written in 1982, "Do not uproot a sapling", also gave rise to much controversy, because of the political statement it contained, and its widespread use during the Israeli withdrawal from the Sinai peninsula when peace was reached with Egypt, when several Israeli settlements inside Egypt had to be vacated.

On the coin's obverse, a likeness of Naomi Shemer and a line from one of her songs "Your songs flow after you".

On the reverse, musical notes and Naomi Shemer's signature along with the face value of the coin.

This coin commemorates the 100th anniversary year of Einstein's Theory of Relativity and his Annus Mirabilis, and the 50th anniversary year of his death. This "Einstein Year" 2005 was celebrated as the Year of Physics, with the endorsement of the United Nations.
Albert Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921 "for his services to Theoretical Physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect". Einstein was close in heart with Israel. In 1952 he was invited to become the second President of the State of Israel, and before his death in 1955 he left his scientific papers and his rights to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, which he himself had helped to establish.

On the obverse of the coin, concentric circles form the portrait of Einstein and express Einstein's World of Physics, his time and space, and mass and energy theories. To fully appreciate the design, the coin obverse should be held further back than usual. When moved from side to side, the coin catches light at different angles. The movement of light created symbolizes the nature and velocity of light that played such a central role in Einstein's contributions in 1905, specifically, his work on the Photoelectric Effect and his Special Theory of Relativity.

On the reverse, around the face value, are the elliptic orbits of the planets around the sun, signifying the renewed study of planetary motion and of the universe to which Einstein's General Theory of Relativity contributed so significantly.

Higher Education in Israel is diverse, creative and individualistic. Strong academic foundations were laid even before the establishment of the modern State of Israel in 1948, and Israel has succeeded in reaching high international standards in many disciplines. Three Israeli scientists have been awarded Nobel Prizes. The 58th Anniversary of Independence Coin puts the spotlight on Israel's Higher Education System that prepares the country for a prosperous future.

The coin's design consists of several symbols of the different disciplines in which Israel excels - Science, Humanities, Technology, Mathematics and others - outlined by the shape of a student's cap. Each of the four angles of the cap reach out to the future, symbolizing the aims of Higher Education to advance the State of Israel and humanity all over the world.

Abraham was sitting by his tent in the desert heat. His wife, Sarah, in her most admirable modest manner, was inside, when three men appeared. Abraham immediately began to prepare hospitality for the wayfarers. He did not know that they were angels disguised as men, who were to announce that Sarah was to have a child through whom Abraham would become the father of a great nation. Since Sarah was 89 with no children and Abraham was 99, this news was unbelievable. Miraculously, this came true and Sarah later gave birth to Isaac.

On the obverse of the coin, Abraham welcomes tree angels while Sarah sits off to one side. On the Face Value Side, stars which recall the Divine Promise to Abraham that his descendents will multiply "as the stars of heaven" (Genesis 26:4).

The White City of Tel Aviv with its Bauhaus architecture was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2003. This style of architecture was developed in Germany in the 1920s and became popular in Tel Aviv in the 1930s. Today, Tel Aviv has the largest concentration in the world of buildings built in the Bauhaus "International Style" with more than 4,000 buildings built between the years 1931 - 1956.
The term "International Style" was applied to the American form of Bauhaus architecture. These are low buildings, usually two to four floors, built as a single building on a plot of land and covered with light colored plaster. The buildings were used as residential and public structures.

The coin depicts Tel Aviv's typical International Bauhaus Architecture, characterized by its balconies and flat roofs, asymmetry, functionality and simplicity, and bears the emblems of UNESCO and the World Heritage Sites.

The exterior of the building depicted on the common obverse strongly resembles a mirror-image of the residential Zlotopolsky House on 9, Gordon Street, built in 1935.

The reverse design of each denomination includes a different interior diagram of the Tel Aviv Bauhaus buildings.

"And the wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them" (Isaiah 11:6). According to the prophecy of Isaiah, there will come a time in the future, when the wolf will dwell with the lamb. Since a wolf would in all circumstances devour a lamb, we understand that the allegory in Isaiah's prophecy represents a time when there will be lasting peace and harmony among mankind.

The design of this coin is an artistic expression of Isaiah's prophecy, which portrays the security of the lamb resting peacefully next to the wolf.

Shmuel Yosef Agnon, Israel's first Nobel Prize winner, was awarded the prize for literature in 1966. Born in 1888 in Eastern Galicia, he immigrated to Israel in 1908. His works depict much of past Jewish life in Europe, life in the Land of Israel before the modern Jewish State was established, and Judaism itself. Agnon writes in Hebrew with exceptional richness of language, incorporating many quotations from the Scriptures and Jewish Sages. Agnon was one of the central figures of Hebrew literature of the 20th century and was awarded the Israel Prize twice, the Bialik prize, and the Nobel Prize. His books have been translated into English, German and many other languages. He died in Jerusalem in 1970.

The coin's obverse shows Agnon in his famous pensive mode, as depicted on the NIS 50 banknotes of both series I and II of the New Sheqel.

Since the founding of the State of Israel, reserve soldiers have been an essential part of the strength and power of the Israel Defense Forces. The strength of the reserves results from quality manpower, and from commitment to comrades, the unit, and the country. Reserve soldiers must be prepared to report for service immediately in times of crisis, leaving business, work, and especially family. Friendship, Zionism, and volunteering - these are the values that motivate the reservists. Experience and professionalism transform the reserve unit into a serious fighting force. Reserve units have participated in all of Israel's wars since 1948. When "called-up", reserve soldiers, both men and, in recent years, also women, serve alongside regular army units, contributing to the defense and security of the nation. The coin salutes the role of reserve soldiers in guaranteeing the security of the State of Israel and recognizes the special sacrifices of the soldiers and their families.

The coin's obverse depicts a child's teddy bear pendant against the background of a soldier's ID tag, reflecting the dual nature of reserve duty, commitment to family and commitment to country.
On the reverse appears a triangle, symbolizing the triangular reserve duty call-up logo that appears on every envelope holding a reserve duty summons.

The Exodus from Egypt is the seminal event in the history of the Jewish people and is a universal symbol of liberation from bondage and slavery for all mankind. It symbolizes the spirit of freedom opposing enslavement and oppression, as expressed by Rabbi Kook: "the Exodus from Egypt will forever remain the springtime of the entire world". The Exodus as described in the Bible was a miracle wrought by G-d in order to bring the Israelites to the Land of Israel and to give them Torah at Mount Sinai. The Israelites fled, pursued by the forces of Pharaoh, and, as they reached the Red Sea, Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, as the Lord had commanded, and the waters were divided. The Jewish people crossed into redemption while the Egyptians were consumed by the waters.

The parting of the sea, the safe passage of the Israelites between the walls of water, and the waves which closed upon the Egyptians - all are represented on this coin.

Recognized as a World Heritage Site in 2001, Masada has great historical and archaeological importance. Between 37 and 31 BC, on a rock plateau 450 meters above the Dead Sea Herod the Great, King of Judea, built the a glorious palace and refuge for himself here in case of revolt. The system of Roman fortifications surrounding the site is the best such system extant today. Masada is a symbol of the love of freedom and the willingness to fight, even until death, to preserve it. The refusal of the last 960 fighters to surrender to the awesome might of the Roman Empire for three years is amazing. This "obdurate, stiff necked people" preferred to die than fall captive to their enemies, as expressed in the pledge "We shall remain free men". The fall of Masada in early 73 AD signaled the end of the Great Revolt against Rome. With the establishment of the State of Israel Masada became a symbol of gallantry and bravery on which was built the Zionist ethos and the identity of the new generation of Israeli youth. "Masada shall not fall again" expresses the determination to defend the country at all costs.

The coin's obverse gives a view of Masada with at the right the ramp built by the Romans to conquer the fortress, as well as the emblems of UNESCO and the World Heritage Sites.

The reverse shows the outline of the fortress as a silhouette.

Israel is a paradise for birds and birdwatchers every day of the year. Situated at the crossroad linking Europe, Asia and Africa, between the Great Rift Valley and the shores of the Mediterranean, Israel's unique climatic conditions and variety of habitats make it a stopover point second to none in the world during the spring and fall migrations. Twice annually Israel hosts 500 million migrating birds, more than a billion birds in total, and they have become a significant and beautiful part of our landscape. A remarkable 540 different species have been identified, more than in many countries much larger than Israel geographically. Migratory flight patterns are oblivious to politics in the world below, proving the slogan, "migrating birds know no boundaries". They can provide the basis for international cooperation in education, research, conservation, and tourism. The flight of birds symbolizes the universal dream of freedom of the spirit.

The 61st Anniversary commemorative coin focuses on the newly-proclaimed national bird of Israel, the beautiful hoopoe (Upupa) and the two "runners-up", the graceful warbler (Prinia), and the goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis). The hoopoe, who wears a natural crown on her head, is found in gardens and fields in all sections of the country. It is cited numerous times in Jewish scripture: "And the stork, the heron after her kind, and the hoopoe…" (Leviticus 11:19).

The obverse of all three coins is dominated by the hoopoe, Israel's national bird, flanked by the warbler (top) and goldfinch (right).

On each coin's reverse, a different bird appears: the goldfinch on the 1 NIS silver BU coin, the hoopoe on the 2 NIS silver Proof coin, and the warbler on the 10 NIS gold coin. The images of the real-life birds conform to their appearance on the coins' reverse; the goldfinch is on the left, the hoopoe in the middle and the warbler on the right.

Samson was a Nazarite, an ascetic, who abstained from worldly pleasures, including drinking alcohol and even cutting his hair. When Samson was on his way to meet the Philistine girl he wanted to wed, he encountered an attacking lion. The Lord gave him super human strength to fight and destroy it. Later, when on his way to his wedding, he observed bees producing honey in the carcass of the lion - an unexpected lesson in the vagaries of life and in the possibility of making something sweet from something quite the opposite.

The coin's obverse is graced with an artistic rendering of Samson wrestling with the fierce lion in the Philistine city of Timnat, in ancient Mesopotamian style typical of the Canaanite period. A stylized palm tree symbolizes the Land of Israel, where this scene took place.
On the reverse appear the face value in Hebrew and English, the State emblem, the word "Israel" in three languages and the mint year.

This gold coin is a miniature version of "Samson and the Lion" 10 New Sheqalim gold coin (KM-465), also dated 2009/5769, and was issued as part of an international "The Smallest Gold Coin" series.

Akko richly deserves to be included among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, worthy of preservation, inasmuch as this 4,000 year old port city, jutting into the blue waters of the Mediterranean on Israel's northern coast, is a unique and priceless jewel. UNESCO's designation of Akko states that the exceptional history of the city is reflected in the fact that its well preserved Crusader subterranean city, dating from the Middle Ages, atop which is the Islamic fortress city of Ottoman times (18th-19th centuries), presents a priceless picture and testament of how ancient cities were planned and constructed and how later cities were built emerging from and on top of the older ones. This is exemplified as well in the layered archaeological findings of Jerusalem and each city teaches us about the other one. It is interesting to note that the Crusader city, with Byzantine and Roman remnants, was discovered in the 1960's when municipal development necessitated the construction of a modern sewer system.
Akko incorporates and encapsulates the entire history and archaeology of the Land of Israel, from Biblical times even before King Solomon, through the Greeks and Romans, the Byzantines, the Crusaders, the Ottoman Muslims, Napoleon, the British and, finally, the fledgling State of Israel (as depicted in the famous film "Exodus", with its dramatic prison escape from Acre's moat fortress). Akko (Acre) is also a microcosm of modern Israel, where Jews and Arabs live, work and interact together in normalcy which is enviable throughout the Middle East.

The coin's obverse depicts the ancient fortress walls, with the famous Khan-el-Umdan (the hostel of the pillars) and its clock tower. The Khan was built in 1784-5 by the Governor of Acre, Ahmed Jazzaar Pasha (also called "The Butcher of Acre), as one of his projects of improvements in the city. The hostel was built on part of the inner harbor. The clock tower was erected in 1906 to celebrate the 30th year of the reign of the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II. The obverse also shows the subterranean Crusader Knights' Hall, the famous White Mosque and other buildings on the Acre skyline.

The reverse repeats the view of the famous fortress, this time as seen against the backdrop of the Mediterranean.

The first gold bullion coin in the "Jerusalem of Gold" series is dedicated to the Tower of David, one of Jerusalem's major landmarks.

The coin's obverse depicts the Tower of David, the subject of this issue. This magnificent edifice rises above the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, near Jaffa Gate. Note that this is the first Israeli coins ever issued, on which the subject side is also the side on which its face value appears. Hence, this side of the coins is its obverse.

The reverse shows the famous Roaring Lion which also graced the reverse of the 5 Lirot banknote of the Bank of Israel series II (1958), as well as the 5 Lirot and 1/2 Sheqel trade coins. The image of the Roaring Lion appears on a seal excavated at Megiddo in 1903 by Gottlieb Schumacher, and subsequently presented to the Ottoman Sultan Abdel Hamid II, whereupon it mysteriously disappeared, never to be seen again. The seal belonged to Shema, servant of Jerobeam, most probably King Jerobeam II who ruled the Israelite kingdom during the 6th century BC.

* Gold bullion gold coins are usually traded at a varying premium above their spot bullion value.

Jonah the Prophet was commanded by the Lord to go from the Land of Israel to the city of Nineveh (thought to be Mosul in Iraq, today) to warn its people to repent for their evil ways, lest their city be destroyed. Jonah, however, chose to flee from his mission by boarding a ship bound for Tarshish (thought to be Spain, today). When a violent storm arose, the ship's crew believed that one of the passengers was responsible and cast lots to determine who it could be. The lot fell on Jonah, who admitted his guilt and was cast into the sea, which then calmed down. Meanwhile, a big fish, thought to be a whale, swallowed up Jonah into its belly, where he remained for three days and three nights. From the belly of the fish, Jonah prayed to the Lord and was saved when the fish spat him out on the shore. He then understood he was destined to go to Nineveh, as he had been commanded. The King and the people of Nineveh repented and were subsequently saved.

The coin's obverse depicts a whale, with Jonah in its belly. The design is inspired by the Chinese "Yin Yang" philosophy.

In the center of the the reverse appear from top to bottom the word 'Israel', denomination and mint year. Around the rim are the words Jonah in the belly of the fish. Near the bottom rim is a small image of Jonah the Prophet.

Menachem Begin is Israel's second Nobel Laureate. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1978, jointly with Egyptian President Muhammad Anwar El -Sadat. Menachem Begin was born in Brest-Litovsk in 1913, and received a Jewish-Zionist education. At an early age, he joined the "Hashomer Hatzair" and Betar Youth Movement, founded and headed by Zeev Jabotinsky. In 1931, Begin began studying law at the University of Warsaw, graduating in 1935. In 1937, he was appointed the Betar representative in Czechoslovakia, and in 1939, was elected by Jabotinsky as Head of Betar Poland, an organization which trained youth for missions of defense and "illegal" immigration into the Land of Israel. After the outbreak of World War II, Begin escaped from Warsaw and found refuge in Vilnius, Lithuania. In 1940 he was imprisoned by Stalin's NKVD and sentenced to 8 years imprisonment in a Siberian labor camp. Following Nazi Germany invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, Begin was released and enlisted in General Andres' Polish army. Within that framework, he arrived in Israel in 1942 and shortly afterward, was appointed Commander of the Irgun Zva'i Leumi (Etzel), a post which he held until the organization disbanded in 1948. Between 1944-1947, under Begin's command, the Etzel revolted against the British Mandate authorities, operated the Akko prison breakout and release of the underground prisoners, and the bombing of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem. Upon the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Begin founded the "Herut" movement, which merged with the Liberal Party in 1965 to form "Gahal" and together with other parties, in 1973, became the Likud. Begin served as leader of the party and head of the opposition factions in the Knesset. When the Likud won the 1977 elections, Begin was appointed Prime Minister. He hosted Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in his historic visit to Jerusalem in 1977, and in 1979, after lengthy negotiations, signed the peace agreement with Egypt in Washington. In December 1978, he won the Nobel Peace Prize, along with President Sadat. Following Ezer Weizman's retirement in 1980, Begin assumed the post of Minister of Defense, and in 1981 he ordered the Israeli Air Force to bomb and destroy the Osirak nuclear reactor in Iraq. In 1982, Israel launched Operation Peace for Galilee to destroy the terrorist infrastructure in Lebanon. The adverse situation in Lebanon and his wife Aliza's death in November 1982 led Begin to resign from the premiership in September 1983. He spent the rest of his life in seclusion, and was rarely seen in public. Menachem Begin passed away in March 1992.

The coin's obverse bears a portrait of Menachem Begin.
The reverse shows the famous triple handshake on the White House Lawn on 26 March 1979, seconds after signing of the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty, with President Sadat standing on the left, US President Jimmy Carter in the middle, and Prime Minister Begin on the right.
