The General Security Service (GSS), known outside Israel by its acronym "Shin-Bet" (the first letters of the partial Hebrew name Sherut Bitahon), is Israel's internal intelligence and security agency. It protects the State against terrorism, sabotage, espionage and other security threats, for instance originating from the Palestinian Authority or areas under Israeli military control. Almost all operations of the GSS are shrouded in mystery. Because of its preventive actions, many deadly terrorist assaults on Israel and its civilian population have been foiled since its foundation in mid-1948, only several months after Israel became independent. The GSS is also known for its competence in pursuing and apprehending of terror suspects and perpetrators of terrorist outrages against Israel, both the actual terrorists and their handlers.

The "Shin-Bet" medal's obverse has two varieties; one with the words "State of Israel" and without the State emblem, and the other without the name "State of Israel but with the State emblem. On both obverses appears the Hebrew name Sherut Bitahon Clali (General Security Service), from which the better known acronym "Shin-Bet" is derived.
The common reverse depicts the motto of the GSS, "Defender that shall not be seen".
All medals were issued for the exclusive use of the GSS, and its issuance was not published by the IGCMC.

The Exodus from Egypt is mentioned 160 times in the Bible, and the commandments of the Torah are all connected with it. It is mentioned in the daily prayers because of its significance as the formative event which moulded the character of the Jewish people as a nation. Pesach (Passover), the feast which commemorates the Exodus, is also called "Festival of Freedom" and "Spring Festival", and celebrates renewal in nature and the human spirit. Families assemble around the Seder table and read the Haggada, a collection of stories and prayers commemorating the Exodus. Symbolic foods on the Seder Plate include Matza (unleavened bread) and bitter herbs, a symbol of slavery. The Cup of Elijah evokes the prophet, herald of the Messiah.

The obverse of the medal is graced by the Seder Plate, depicting the Cup of Elijah and the six symbolic foods of the Seder: the shank bone of a lamb, haroset (a sweet, dark-colored, lumpy paste made of fruits and nuts), bitter herbs, parsley, an egg, and horseradish. The word "Pesach" appears in Hebrew and "Passover" in English.
On the reverse appear figures symbolizing the passage from slavery to freedom with a Matza in the background. On each side of the Matza is one of the four words of deliverance from Exodus 6:6-7 "I will bring you out; I will rid you out of their bondage; I will redeem; I will take you (to me for a people)".

"The Entry into Jerusalem" is one of the works in the tapestry adorning the Knesset, Israel's parliament. After King David established his capital in Jerusalem, he and the Israelites brought the Ark of the Covenant into the city in a joyous procession "with all manner of instruments... with harps and with psalteries and with timbrels and with sistra and with cymbals". Around the figure of David dancing and playing the lyre before the Ark, Marc Chagall unites the past, present and future of the people of Israel in a colorful and exquisite composition. Chagall blends David and his procession harmoniously with Hassidim in kaftans and pioneers and landscapes and symbols ranging from biblical times to the period of the modern state.

The medal's obverse shows a colored lithograph depicting King David playing the lyre and dancing, taken from Chagall's drawing "The Entry into Jerusalem". Around him, figures from the past and present dance and are joyful. The artist's signature appears in English, and "King David" in Hebrew and English.
A seven-branched candelabrum appears ob the reverse, a detail from Chagall's mosaic in the Knesset, with the artist's signature in Hebrew.

The reverse of both 190 mm copper and silver versions is plain.

"Blow the Shofar at the new moon, at the full moon on our feast day. For this is a statute for Israel, an ordinance of the God of Jacob' (Psalms 81). This passage describes Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year. This is the Day of Judgment, but also a festival which reminds us that we all desire the merit of being inscribed for a sweet, healthy and prosperous year. Rosh Hashana falls on "Rosh Chodesh", the beginning of the month, when the new moon is not yet visible. The Shofar, a ram's horn, blown on this day, echoes the call to repentance and message of judgment. Prayers and customs associated with this day, such as eating pomegranates and apples dipped in honey, are symbols of sweetness and meritous deeds which all hope the New Year will bring.

The obverse shows in the center within a round frame with crown on top, in the form of a pomegranate, the Hebrew words "Rosh Hashana" in stylized letters. Around the circumference appears the Hebrew Rosh Hashana wish "Let the New Year begin with its blessings", and "Rosh Hashana" in English.

The reverse depicts a Jew wrapped in a Talit (prayer shawl) blowing the Shofar. Above, along the circumference, are the words "Happy New Year" in Hebrew and English, and below the Hebrew words "day of blowing the Shofar".

The World Conference on Soviet Jewry was created by the Liaison Office of the Foreign Ministry in 1971 at the Brussels Conference, as a means of increasing the national struggle to free Soviet Jewry. The Conference, which became a mass movement, united Jewish organizations, communities and committees in Israel and around the world. The varied activities of the Conference assisted Israel in leading this struggle.

On the obverse is depicted the symbol of the conference, a circle of five dancers creating a Star of David figure. The right side of the circle is open and a hand is extended to two figures, symbol of absorption of immigration. The text reads: "world conference on soviet jewry" in Hebrew and English.
The reverse shows horizontal lines resembling prison cell bars, with a sun behind them, symbol of the siege of Soviet Jewry, and the inscription "Let My People Go".

Activities aimed at bringing the Israeli public closer to the world of the Rabbinate included a movie describing the history of the Rabbinate, a special exhibit about the Rabbinate, study days for educators and students from all sectors, an expedition of rabbis to various communities, and quizzes about the Rabbinate for student participation were among the activities undertaken.

The obverse depicts Heichal Shlomo, the home of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel. To the left is the State emblem and the text "70 Years to the Chief Rabbinate 5681-5751", and near the top "Chief Rabbinate of Israel". The biblical passage near the bottom rim reads: "According to the law which they shall teach thee" (Deuteronomy 17:11).

On the reverse appears a stylized Menorah combined with the Tablets of the Covenant, with above them the scales of justice. Along the top rim the biblical text reads: "They shall teach Jacob Thine ordinances, and Israel Thy law" (Deuteronomy 33:10).

The colorful rainbow symbolizes the covenant between all creatures and their Maker made with Noah immediately after the Flood. Man pledged to adhere to certain basic and universal moral principles, in return for which God promised never again to destroy all life from the face of the earth. "God said to Noah...'This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth'" (Genesis 9:12). The "Everlasting Covenant" medal by Yaacov Agam depicts a brightly colored rainbow symbolizing mankind's personal link with the Creator. A small protrusion at the center allows the medal to spin rapidly on a smooth surface, expressing perpetual motion and flux, the essence of life.

A multicolored rainbow with a spiral in the background adorns the medal's obverse. The words "Everlasting Covenant" appear in Hebrew and English.
The reverse depicts a map of the world within a circle, with Jerusalem at the center. The words "The world is built by love" appear in Hebrew and English, as well as the author's signature.

Tel Aviv and New York have much in common, including bustle, color, entertainment, fashion, cultural life. The connection between the two cities has existed for over 85 years. When a handful of Jews dreamed of establishing Tel Aviv as a model Jewish town early in this century, they imagined it developing as the Israeli New York. Akiva Aryeh Weiss, who led the group that initiated Tel Aviv, even then compared it in a pamphlet to New York. Since then, New York has left its mark on the life of Tel Aviv in many and varied spheres, primarily in the arts, culture and entertainment, but in architecture and business as well.

The obverse shows Dani Karavan's white square with the coastline and skyline of Tel Aviv in the background. Above are the words "Tel Aviv-Yafo" in Hebrew and English.
The skyline of New York and the Statue of Liberty are depicted on the reverse. "New York" is inscribed in Hebrew and "New York City" in English.

The Madrid Conference was hosted by the government of Spain and co-sponsored by the USA and the USSR. It convened on 30th October 1991 and lasted for three days. It was an early attempt by the international community to start a peace process through direct overt negotiations involving Israel and the Palestinians as well as Arab countries including Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan. Even though peace with Lebanon, Syria and the Palestinian Authority remains elusive until this day, a major benefit of the conference and the process is the greatly increased number of countries which recognize and have some degree of diplomatic relations with it - nearly doubling - in particular the major powers of China and India and some even in the Arab world, like Oman, Qatar, Tunisia, Morocco and Mauritania, along with the decline of the Arab boycott and economic relations with some of the Arab countries. Approximately three years later Jordan would sign a separate peace treaty with Israel.

On the obverse appears the inscription "Direct peace negotiations between Israel and its neighbours" in Hebrew, English and Arabic, along with an olive branch.
The reverse symbolizes parts of a jigsaw puzzle which are beginning to come together. Four pieces in the center carry the word 'Peace" in Hebrew, English, Arabic and Latin.

One thousand five-hundred years of Jewish life in Spain came to an end in 1492 with the expulsion of the Jews. Throughout those 15 centuries, under Roman, Visigoth, Moslem and Christian rule, Spanish Jewry cultivated a community life unparalleled in cultural achievement and richness. Creative activity flourished among Hebrew linguists, Bible exegetists, poets and philosophers, including Ibn Gabirol, Yehuda Halevi, and Ibn Ezra and rabbis such as Isaac Alfassi and Joseph Ibn Migash. The Inquisition aimed at eradicating all hope of returning to Judaism among forced converts to Christianity. This led to the order of expulsion, signed by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella on March 31,1492, and the expulsion of some 200,000 Jews from Spain.

On the obverse of the medal appears a map of the Iberian peninsula, illustrating the expulsion with arrows showing the routes taken by the refugees and a sailing ship typical of the period. Below the map is the passage "I SHALL NOT DIE BUT LIVE" in Hebrew and English. Around the circumference, above, the words "500 ANOS DE LA EXPULSION" in Hebrew and Spanish; below, "1492-1992.5252-5752".
The reverse shows a wall from the 14th century Shmuel Halevi Abulafia Synagogue of Toledo with inscribed Psalms. On the right, a Jew in the traditional costume of the Moslem period, the seal of Todros Halevi and, in the background, the Kabbalistic spheres. Below, the verse "My heart longed for the courtyards of the Lord" (Psalm 84:2) in Hebrew.

The Nazi extermination industry operated in many ways. Its most efficient and ghastly manifestations were concentration and death camps. In January 1942, at Wannsee near Berlin, Adolf Eichmann, Reinhardt Heydrich and other senior Nazi officials met to coordinate the "Final Solution" to the 'Jewish Problem," deciding upon the construction of death camps and murder by asphyxiation by Zyklon B poison gas in specially constructed chambers. Most of these camps were situated in Poland. Jews were deceptively welcomed to the sound of an orchestra. Numbers were tattooed on their arms, the healthy worked and those less fit were murdered. In the midst of even these infernal conditions, there were manifestations of solidarity, compassion and resistance among the inmates.

The images of six children at Auschwitz on the medal's obverse symbolize the 6 million victims. Around the circumference appear the words "in memory of the concentration and death camps 1942-1992" in Hebrew above and in English below.
The reverse depicts an electrified barbed wire fence, a watch tower against a background of shacks and rising smoke. The names of the six death camps: "TREBLINKA, CHELMNO, AUSCHWITZ-BIRKENAU, MAIDANEK, SOBIBOR, BELZEC" in Hebrew and Latin letters.

In honor of the 25th Anniversary of the Reunification of Jerusalem, the people of Israel makes a covenant with its eternal capital city, as was done 2,450 years earlier by Nehemiah and the returnees from exile in Babylon. The present Covenant is signed in special ceremonies by Jewish leaders in Israel and abroad. This medal is a tangible symbol of the Covenant. Each of us can fulfill the passage engraved upon it, which is also this year's slogan" "Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem".

On the medal's obverse appear landmarks of old and new Jerusalem within the outline of the Dove of Peace. Along the circumference, the words JERUSALEM REUNITED", 1967-1992 5727-5752 and, in Hebrew, the passage 'Jerusalem - built as a city that is bound firmly together" and the source, "Psalm 122".
The reverse shows the emblem of the reunification and the passage "PRAY FOR THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM", in Hebrew in the center, and in Arabic and English along the circumference.

In 1492, Christopher Columbus decided to follow a dream: with his three boats, the stubborn sailor sailed west to explore the riches of the east. The voyage of 1492 led to a discovery which changed reality forever - a new world was discovered, holding a new promise for humanity and opening the gates to freedom and progress. It is an irony of history that the same rulers who sent Columbus on his journey that year expelled the Jews from their country, Spain, and that after long years of wandering, many of them and their descendants found refuge in the new world opened by Columbus. This is the thread connecting the Jewish people with the dream of one man. It gives the anniversary special relevance to the people of Israel.

The medal's obverse depicts one of Columbus' three ships, sails billowing, entering the Gulf of Mexico. A map of the American continent serves as background. In the lower portion, the biblical passage reads: "Through the paths of the seas" and its source "Psalms 8:9", in Hebrew and English.

The reverse shows the Statue of Liberty and symbols of America: skyscrapers, Edison's first electric lamp, a rocket on its way to the moon, nuclear atom, suspension bridge, airplane, and a Coca Cola bottle, as well as the years 1492 - 1992 and the inscription "THE NEW WORLD" in Hebrew and English.

The enchanting artwork of Yossel Bergner graces this medal. Bergner was born in Vienna in 1920 and spent his youth in Warsaw. At age 17 he emigrated to Australia, thus escaping the fate of many European Jews. Notwithstanding, Warsaw and the Holocaust leave their marks on his work. Bergner served in the Australian Army during the war. After the war, he received a scholarship to study art in Melbourne. He later spent several years in Paris, where he claims to have discovered color. After a period in Canada, he immigrated to Israel. In 1980, he received the Israel Prize for Art.

Succot (Feast of Tabernacles) is known as the "Time of Our Rejoicing," marking the culmination of the period of introspection, the Days of Repentance. Succot is also known as the "Season of the Harvest". The feature of this holiday are the succot, temporary dwellings resembling those in which our forefathers dwelt following the Exodus from Egypt. It is customary to invite guests to the succot, including the Seven Divine Guests: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Aaron and David. It is an obligation to acquire the Four Species: a palm frond, myrtle, willow and an etrog (a citrus fruit resembling a lemon), which are held together to symbolize the unity of the Jewish people. This is one of the three holidays of pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

Obverse:
The inscription "SUCCOT" in Hebrew and Latin letters is surrounded by four palm fronds, forming the outline of a succa, with two pomegranates above each frond.
Reverse:
The Four Species: Etrog, palm frond, myrtle and willow, with a curved ribbon joining them. Above, in Hebrew, the inscription "You shall rejoice on your festival".

Menachem Begin was born in Brisk, Lithuania (then part of Poland) on August 16, 1913. In the Betar youth movement, he met and was deeply impressed by Ze'ev Jabotinsky, founder of the Jewish Legion in World War I and organizer of the Haganah defense to protect Jerusalem's Jews. Begin studied law at the University of Warsaw. At the outbreak of World War II, he worked feverishly to save Jews, was imprisoned by the Russians and was sentenced to eight years in Siberia. Freed after the Nazi invasion, he served in the Free Polish Army and thus arrived in Israel in 1942. He became head of the Etzel resistance in 1943, founded the Herut party, and as head of the Likud bloc was elected Prime Minister in 1977. Several months after Begin's election, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat made his historic visit to Israel, and in 1979 Israel' and Egypt signed a peace agreement. Menachem Begin died on March 9, 1992.

Obverse:
Portrait of Menachem Begin. Along the circumference is the caption "Commander of the Irgun Zvai Leumi, Prime Minister of the Government of Israel". The Lochamei Herut Yisrael (Fighters for the Freedom of Israel), known by its Hebrew acronym Lehi, was founded in 1940 by Avraham Stern (code named "Yair") and those members of the Etzel underground organization who opposed Etzel's policy of suspending the struggle against British rule during World War II. Lehi continued this struggle. In February 1942 the British located Yair's hideout and he was killed. This was a serious setback to Lehi. Half a year later, Yitzhak Shamir reconstituted the organization and renewed the struggle. Many Lehi members were killed and detained by the British. Lehi joined the Israel Defense Forces with the establishment of the State. This medal commemorates both the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of Lehi (1940-1990), and the 50th Anniversary of the death of Avraham Stern, "Yair" (1942-1992).

In the center of the obverse appears the text "50 years Lochamei Herut Yisrael". The English translation "50 years * Fighters for the Freedom of Israel * F.F.L." appears near the right rim, with the dates "1940-1990 * 5701-5751" near the bottom.

The reverse depicts a portrait of "Yair", Avraham Stern, and the text "Avraham Stern * Yair * Founder of F.F.I. in Hebrew and English. His dates of birth and death 5668-5702 and 1907-1942 appear in the center.

Shavuot is the shortest of the three holidays during which Jews made pilgrimage to the Temple. The other two, Passover and Sukkot, last a week each while Shavuot is but a single day. Despite this, pilgrims laden with first fruits made their way to Jerusalem, bringing figs, grapes and raisins, an ox with gilt horns leading the way. The people of Jerusalem would go out to greet the pilgrims and the Levites received them with song. Shavuot is the harvest holiday, as it says in Exodus 23:16: "You shall observe the festival of harvest, of the first fruits of your labor, of what you sow in the field". Nowadays, it is customary on this holiday to decorate the home with the seven species: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates.

Obverse:
Inscribed: "Time of the giving of our Torah" in Hebrew, with tablets of the covenant (Ten Commandments) incorporated. An ear of barley, an olive branch and a cluster of grapes. The word "SHAVUOT" in Hebrew and English.

Reverse:

Stylized field and figure harvesting. Lines made by harvesters in shape of stylized Star of David. Hebrew inscription. "You shall observe the feast of the first fruits".

Yorn Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is unique in its holiness and purpose: forgiveness of each individual and of the Jewish people for their sins. This is the culmination of the Ten Days of Repentance which begin with Rosh Hashana (the New Year). This is the only day during which worshippers in the synagogue wrap themselves in the prayer shawl for evening as well as morning prayer. The Torah declares that on Yom Kippur all sins will be forgiven (Leviticus 16:30), our Sages interpreted that only those sins made by man against the Lord will be pardoned, while those made against a fellow man will be forgiven only upon direct reconciliation. The closing prayer concludes with the blowing of the Shofar, a ram's horn.

Obverse:
A talit (prayer shawl) and the Hebrew words "repentance, prayer and charity". Below, along the circumference, the words "YOM KIPPUR" in Hebrew and Latin letters.
Reverse:
Engraving upon an Ark of the Covenant of the 14th century. In the center, the Hebrew inscription: "forgive a holy people on this sacred day". On either side of the ark, a shofar.

To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising the IGCMC prepared an Official Medal to be issued towards Holocaust Memorial Day 1993. After its initial release to the public, an English-language blunder was detected, the English text on the obverse reading: "50 YEARS FOR THE UPRISING IN WARSAW GHETTO. The error medal, both in tombac and silver, was hastily withdrawn, but a small quantity of error medals had already been distributed. Shortly thereafter a new corrected medal was issued (see Type II hereunder).

In August 1940, some 450,000 Jews were packed into the narrow confines of the Warsaw Ghetto, which was surrounded by an 18 km wall. The gates in the wall were manned by German, Polish and Jewish police. During the first year and a half, 100,000 Jews died of hunger and disease. In July-September 1942, the Germans sent more than 300,000 Jews to death camps. In October 1942, two Jewish undergrounds were established: The Jewish Fighting Organization with 550 members, under the command of Mordecai Anielewicz, and the Jewish Military Union with about 250 fighters. Armed rebellion began April 19,1943, the eve of Passover, and continued over six weeks despite German armor. Most of the Jewish fighters were killed. The few survivors joined the partisans.

The obverse of the corrected medal depicts the corrected text "50 YEARS SINCE THE UPRISING IN WARSAW GHETTO" in Hebrew and English.

The reverse shows a Jewish fighter holding gun, with ruins in the background. Around the circumference, the inscription reads: "World conference of Federation of Jewish Fighters, partisans and camp inmates" in Hebrew and English.

"IVDEA CAPTA" sestertius of Vespasian, struck in 71 AD to celebrate the victory in the Jewish Revolt.

In 1993 the IGCMC reissued its very first medal "Liberation". The first version was issued in 1958, version II was released in 1962, version III in 1988, and this is version IV. The Jewish rebellion which erupted in 66 AD and the destruction of the Second Temple four years later determined the fate of the Jewish people and its land for many generations to come. Despite Rome's military power and superiority of arms, Jewish fighters forced the Romans to mobilize even larger forces. Had the Romans not mobilized additional legions, the outcome may have been different. In honor of their victory, the Romans issued a series of victory coins depicting 'Judaea Capta" - a palm tree, the symbol of Judaea, next to a male or female Jewish prisoner. The State of Israel Liberation medal juxtaposes Israel's enslavement and liberation.

On the obverse appears a date palm with seven fronds and two clusters of fruit. To the right, a Jewish farmer plants a tree, symbol of liberated Israel, and to the left, a woman joyfully lifts up her child. The inscription "Israel liberated 1948" in inscribed in Hebrew and English.
The reverse depicts a replica of Roman coin of 71 CE, also depicting a date palm in the center. To the right of it, a mourning Jewess (symbolizing Judaea) sitting upon armor. To the left of the tree, a Roman soldier is depicted. "IVDEA CAPTA" and "SC" below (Judaea is captured - by decision of the Senate). In the modern setting around the replica are the words 'JUDAEA CAPTIVE 70 C.E." in Hebrew and English. To the left and right are chains, symbolizing captivity and bondage.

A group of Jews from Jaffa lay the foundations for the "City of Peace," the first name of Ramat Hasharon, in 1922. The group sought to construct a garden neighborhood in an open space, far from the crowded neighborhoods of Jaffa. Each dunam of the first 2,000, was purchased for 5 Egyptian pounds. Pleasant scenery, comfortable climate and fresh air brought the first settlers here in 1923. Today, Ramat Hasharon has circa 45,000 residents who enjoy one of the highest standards of quality of life in the country. In honor of its 70th year, this special medal was issued exclusively for the Ramat HaSharon Regional Council for presentation to veterans of the settlement, as a gift to soldiers upon completion of their service, and to honor Israelis and foreigners.

Obverse:

Bnei-Brak appears for the first time in the Bible in Joshua 19. During the Tanaitic period, it became well known as the place where Rabbi Akiva's yeshiva was located. Bnei-Brak is also mentioned in the Passover Haggada. Modern Bnei-Brak was founded in 1924, at the initiative of a group of Hassidim from Warsaw. The founder of the city was Rabbi Yizhaq Gershtenkorn, writer of religious literature, a man of vision and deed. Today, Bnei-Brak has circa 180,000 residents and is the 10th largest city in Israel. It has one of the largest percentages of children among Israel's cities, and over 100 Torah and educational institutions as well as some of the most famous yeshivot in the world. The vast majority of the population is ultra-religious. Bnei-Brak is one of the poorest cities in Israel, eanking only 2 out of 10 on the socio-economic scale.

Obverse:

The series of painting depicting the Twelve Tribes by Salvador Dali honored Israel's 25th Anniversary. Though not Jewish, Dali was profoundly impressed by the rebirth of a Jewish state after 2,000 years of exile. Zebulun: " Zebulun dwells by the sea-shore, his shore is a haven for ships, and his frontier rests on Sidon" (Genesis 49:13). Although Zebulun was regarded as a tribe of sailors, the Prophetess Deborah praised it for not behaving like the other sea-faring tribes, Dan and Asher. The territory of Zebulun stretched from the area of central Galilee, today known as the Valley of Zebulun, to Haifa.

On December 14, 1947, three illegal immigrant ships carrying hundreds of Jews from Morocco joined the attempts to break the British blockade of Israel's coast. After achieving its independence, Morocco outlawed Jewish emigration and closed Jewish institutions, forcing illegal Jewish emigration to Israel. A small ship called Pisces - renamed the Egoz, was caught in a storm opposite the Moroccan coast on January 9, 1961 and all its 44 passengers drowned. With the reburial on Mt. Herzl in Jerusalem of some of the bodies from the ship Egoz in 1992, a heroic chapter in the history of North African Jewry and their struggle to immigrate to Israel was commemorated. The medal commemorates their heroism and memory.

In the early 1900s, the Turks built the Hedjaz Railway and in 1905 the Emek Railway, with a Deraa-Sea of Galilee-Haifa route, was opened. The Turks and Germans constructed the Afula-Tulkarm-Lod-Beersheba-Nizzana line, which was dismantled after World War I. Issued in 1994 "Historical Coins" set, cat. # HS2

10.00

The Liberation medal was first issued in 1958 to commemorate the nation's 10th Anniversary of Independence. Since then, this medal has been re-issued in various versions, designs, sizes and alloys. The Liberation medal is widely regarded by collectors as the most beautiful Israeli medal ever issued. The medal symbolizes two extremes. Its reverse remembers the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 AD, the subsequent end of the existence of the people of Israel as a sovereign entity, and the beginning of an almost 1900 years long Diaspora. The medal's obverse celebrates Israel's rebirth as a free nation in 1948. This is the fifth version, minted especially for inclusion into the 1994-dated "Historical Coins" set.

The obverse shows a farmer planting a tree and a woman holding her child, under a seven-branched palm tree with two clusters of fruit. The text around the rim reads "A decade of freedom for Israel 5718 [1958]".

The reverse depicts a Roman coin struck by Emperor Vespasian in 71 AD on the occasion of the conquest of Judea. On the left stands Vespasian the victor and on the right a mourning Hebrew sits under a palm tree. The text on the Roman coin reads IVDAEA CAPTA (Judea captured). The letters S.C. stand for "Senatus Consultum" (by order of the Senate). The Hebrew text near the rim reads "Judea in exile 3830 [70 AD]".

The iris blooms in all parts of Israel, from the Negev to the Galilee. The name Iris in Greek means “rainbow” – suggesting the many colors of irises. The Iris was chosen as the symbol of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI). Nearly every area in Israel has its own typical iris variety: the expanses of Yeruham Iris draw thousands of visitors to the Negev each year, as does the deep purple Gilboa Iris in the north. The medal was issued in honor of the springtime, wildflowers, and the 40th anniverasry of the SPNI.

Obverse:

An iris blossom painted in colored enamel. Along the circumference. The inscription “Good Nature” in English and “my nature” in Hebrew.
Reverse:

Two iris blossoms in relief. To the left along the circumference in Hebrew, “to the irises with love”.

The Tribe of Joseph medal is the third in the series of twelve drawings by Salvador Dali in honor of the 25th anniversary of the State of Israel, celebrated in 1973. Joseph, the youngest of the sons of Jacob, was also his father's favorite. Jacob prepared a coat of may colors for Joseph. Joseph, like David and Solomon after him, was a man of contrasts: a dreamer and interpreter of dreams, but also a realist and man of action of such capacity that he became the deputy of the Pharaoh of Egypt. The inspiration to depict Joseph as the mythical unicorn came to Dali from Moses' blessing to Joseph "The firstling of his herd, grandeur is his, and his horns are like the horns of a wild ox" (Deut. 33:17).

Obverse:

Tribe of 'Joseph" - colored silk-screen depicting a unicorn, symbolizing the cornucopia. Above, the inscription 'JOSEPH" in Hebrew and English. Below, artist's signature.
Reverse:

The Tribe of Naphtali medal is the fourth in the series of twelve drawings by Salvador Dali in honor of the 25th anniversary of the State of Israel, celebrated in 1973. Inspiration to depict Naphtali as a deer with antlers comes from Jacob's blessing: "a hind let loose: he gives goodly words" (Genesis 49:21). The goodly words in Jacob's blessing take the form of a young girl dancing opposite the deer.

Obverse:

The 22nd day of Tishri, the 8th day of Succot (the 23rd of Tishri outside Israel) is the holiday known as Simchat Torah ("Rejoicing of the Law"). On that day, the annual reading of the Torah is completed and the cycle begins anew and a prayer for rain is recited. In honor of concluding the reading of the Torah, the Torah scrolls are taken out of the Ark and held by congregants while they circle the Synagogue. The person called to Torah for the final reading is referred to as "Bridegroom of the Torah" while the one called to the Torah for the first leading is known as the "Bridegroom of Genesis". The bride, of course, is the Torah.

Obverse:

Two Torah scrolls, one opened to the final reading of the year, the other opened to the first reading from Genesis. Overlying the scrolls, the Hebrew words: "before all Israel". Along the circumference above, "SIMCHAT TORAH" in Hebrew and Latin letters.

Reverse:

A congregant dancing with a Torah scroll in his hands. To the left, the Ark with Torah scrolls in it, below the Hebrew words "Your Torah is my delight". Below, along the circumference, congregants dancing.

An unknown quantity of medals with a slightly larger diameter of 31-32 mm, with rounded rim and off-centered at various degrees, exist, some with the date 1967-1993 on the obverse missing.

Possible reasons are the use of an earlier different and unsuitable die, the use of which was halted, and too strong a force put on the press, causing obliteration of some text.

The value of such varieties estimated at $50.

The "Jerusalem Reunited - the Knesset"  medal was issued as part of set containing seven medals, commemorating the 3000th Anniversary of Jerusalem which was celebrated in 1996.

Obverse:

A stylized peace dove serves as a backdrop of several famous Jerusalem landmarks. The inscription in English reads: "Jerusalem Reunited 1967-1992". The Hebrew text reads: "Jerusalem... which was linked together - Psalm 123 - 5727-5752".

Reverse:

The Knesset, Israel's parliament.

Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem

Issued in 1994, in this set only

Three thousand years ago David conquered Jerusalem from the Jebusites. The Zion Fortress was seized by the commander of David's forces, Joab, by means of the "Zinnor," apparently a secret tunnel cut from the Gihon spring leading to the city. The City of David was established on the Jebusite Ridge, above the Siloam Spring, surrounded by deep ravines on three sides. On the north side rose the mount where the Temple would be built. David turned Jerusalem into the capital of the Kingdom of Israel. All of the institutions and powers, political and spiritual, were centralized in one place under his leadership. His son Solomon completed the task and constructed the Temple. Subsequent conquests did not dim the memory of Jerusalem as David's city.
The medals were presented in a special "Jerusalem 3000" folder.

        A Mother's Love, by Helen Steiner-Rice:
A mother's love is something that no one can explain.
It is made with deep devotion and of sacrifice and pain.
It is endless and unselfish and enduring, come what may,

For nothing can destroy it or take that love away.
It is patient and forgiving when all others are forsaking
And it never fails or falters even though the heart is breaking.
It believes beyond believing when the world around condemns And it glows with all the beauty of rarest brightest gems.
It is far beyond defining. It defies all explanation
As it still remains secret like the mysteries of creation.

Obverse:

Flower painted in colored enamel. Each medal is individually painted. To the right of the flower is the Hebrew inscription "Dear Mother".
Reverse:
The word "Mother" in Hebrew, Russian, English, Yiddish and French. In the lower portion, to the left of the inscription, a heart.

(Genesis 49:9). The lion is the symbol of the Tribe of ~% from which the royal House of David emerged. The Cameri Theater was founded in 1944 by Yosef Milo and a group of actors who wished to create a young, Israeli theater, in a format distinct from that already existing in Israel. From the beginning, the artistic hallmarks which characterize the Cameri to this day were clearly evident: encouragement of original plays and Israeli talent, awareness of international trends in modern drama, and presentation of classical works translated by the most outstanding Hebrew writers. Since 1971, the Cameri has been the municipal theater of Tel Aviv-Yafo. The board of directors of the theater, headed by the mayor of Tel Aviv, includes representatives from the arts and theater and public figures.

The medal "To Father With Love" expresses the love and admiration for fathers which it is not always easy to express in words. These are universal feelings, and are expressed in this medal in universal symbols: a flower and the word "father" in several languages. This medal is the counterpart of the "Best Mom" medal.

Obverse:
A flower. On the right, along the circumference, the Hebrew inscription "to father with love".
Reverse:
The word "father" in Hebrew, Russian, English, Yiddish, and French. Below, to the left of the inscription, a heart. The medal was issued in two versions as a result of an error in the first in which the Russian word for father was misspelled. This medal is Version I with the Russian word for Father misspelled NANA instead of ПАПА.

The bond of friendship between the Netherlands and Israel was forged during the birth of the Jewish state, but its roots go back to the warm welcome Spanish Jewish exiles found in Holland in the 16th century. Dutch resistance to the Nazis in World War II and the valor many individuals displayed in rescuing Jews from death rave left a deep impression and sense of gratitude in Israel. The Netherlands supported the United Nations partition resolution of 1947 calling for a Jewish state and quickly established diplomatic relations with Israel. Economic and cultural ties between the two countries are excellent. Both countries have used innovative solutions in coping with their unique geographies. Many of Israel's commemorative coins have been minted at the Royal Netherlands Mint in Utrecht and many of our banknotes have been printed by Royal Joh. Enschedé in Haarlem.

Obverse:
Israel side - hands planting and making the desert bloom. Along the circumference, the inscription "MAN AND NATURE" in Hebrew, Dutch and English. At the bottom, the Israel State emblem.
Reverse:
Dutch side - Dykes, waves, windmills, lighthouse and tulips, sea-level gauge. Along the circumference, the inscription "HOLLAND ISRAEL FRIENDSHIP" in Hebrew, Dutch and English. At the bottom, the Dutch royal coat of arms.

Since 1990, until its privatization in 2008, the Israel Government Coins and Medals Corporation used to present its high-volume subscribers with a medal especially minted for this purpose and not further sold to the public, in order to encourage them and as a way of thanking them and showing them how highly they were regarded. Outstanding subscribers were those who met IGCMC criteria for type of purchase and total amount. Three types of medal were distributed to subscribers classified as: Outstanding Subscribers; Silver Subscribers; Gold Subscribers. The medal's obverse had a yearly changing subject, whereas the reverse had more or less standard text depending on the type of subscriber.

The medal's obverse shows the Seal of Jeremiah, carnelian stone, 8th century BC. The seal depicts a gazelle. Beneath are the words "to Jeremiah" in ancient Hebrew letters. The seal was in the collection of Teddy Kollek. In the lower portion, along the circumference, the words "SEAL OF JEREMIAH" in Hebrew and English.
The reverse depicts the IGCMC logo, the text "IN APPRECIATION TO OUR OUTSTANDING / SILVER / GOLD SUBSCRIBER" in Hebrew and English, and the year of issue "1994 5755". The corporation's name in Hebrew and English appears around the rim.

On the 26th of Heshvan, 5684 (1924), the first settlers of Herzliya erected the first hut there, upon barren land in the Sharon. This was the first landmark in the city's history. The first seven settlers and the first hut symbolize belief in the Zionist vision, the vision of Dr. Theodore Herzl, whose name Herzliya bears, and the settlement which, on 11 April 1960, official became a city. The medal marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the city of Herzliya. It is for presentation to honorees of the city and residents who contribute to the social, community, industrial, and economic welfare of Herzliya.

Obverse:
Seventieth anniversary emblem of the city: Hebrew inscription "70 for Herzliya 5685-5755", city emblem to the left and seven stars in a horizontal line, crossing the number "70", a symbol of the seven original settlers. Above, along the circumference, "CITY OF HERZLIYA 1924-1994". Below, along circumference, in Hebrew, "Herzliya, a legend of a city", the slogan of the 70th Anniversary festivities.
Reverse:
Herzliya coast: bathing beaches, hotels, marina, and leisure and entertainment spots. Below, along circumference, in Hebrew, Herzl's motto: "...if you will it, it is no dream..."

"Our servicemen fought, not to conquer... but rather to rescue and restore freedom to those persecuted and oppressed..." The "Liberation" Monument, sculpted by the Nathan Rapoport, commemorates the spirit, dedication and compassion of the American Serviceman as liberator of the oppressed of the Holocaust. The Allies, victorious over Nazi Germany and the liberation of Europe, proclaimed four basic freedoms as the right of all mankind: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from fear and freedom from want. The enlightened of the world continue to fight for these ideals. The Freedom Medal was issued in honor of the freedom fighters symbolized in the Liberation Monument. It was struck using a casting method.

On 7th June 1945, a new corporation was registered with the British mandatory authorities. It was called Zim, Israel Shipping Corporation. The name Zim comes from the Bible: "Ships (Zim) from the quarter of Kittim" (Numbers). It was given to the company by David Remez, later appointed first Transportation Minister of the State of Israel. The Jewish Agency, The Histadrut and Eretz Israel Maritime Authority founded the company. The company began with the ship Kedma. After the establishment of the State, Zim transported refugees and new immigrants and over the years it established a large and diverse worldwide network. Zim is not only a shipping company, but a modern, integrated, international transportation land, sea and air network. Several years after this medal was issued, Zim was privatized and sold off to a controversial family of shipping magnates.

The name Purim is derived from the Persian word "pur," meaning "lot". Haman cast lots in order to determine the day for the mass destruction of all the Jews. However, with the help of Mordechai and his niece Esther, the events took a miraculous turn and the Jews were saved. The wicked decree was canceled and Haman and his ten sons were hanged on a tree. On Purim, celebrated on the 14th of Adar, the Scroll of Esther, a book of the Bible, is read twice: once on the eve of the holiday and once the morning of Purim. In Jerusalem and walled cities, Purim is celebrated a day later. Purim is a day of joy, with feasting, drinking and costumes. People send gifts of food to one another and especially to the poor.

Obverse:

Maariv is the oldest daily newspaper in Israel, and several decades ago was Israel's largest newspaper as well. However, due to mismanagement by incompetent owners, the quality and readership of Maariv has steadily declined since the 1990s. For decades, Maariv with its once famous slogan "The newspaper with the largest distribution in Israel" had a clear edge over its main and fierce rival, Yedioth Aharonot whose slogan (borrowed from the 1973 Yom Kippur War) was "The newspaper of the nation". This medal reflects Maariv's eclipse with the once ubiquitous slogan conspicuously missing.

Obverse:
Inscribed "Maariv" in Hebrew, as it appears in the newspaper logo, upon a background of a news article and relief of several newspaper pages.
Reverse:
Inscribed "THE WORD'S WORTH" in Hebrew and English, with a printing press in the background. This slogan reflects the reliability of good news reporting.

The Tribe of Gad Medal is the seventh in series of the Twelve Tribes created by Salvador Dali in honor of the 25th Anniversary of the State of Israel. The inspiration for depicting the Tribe of Gad as the Camp of God is drawn from Jacob's blessing of Gad: "Gad shall be raided by raiders, but he shall raid at their heels" (Genesis 49:19). The raiders of Gad are depicted as a tent encampment spread out over a plain.

The moshava Yesud Ha-Maala which renewed Jewish settlement in the Hula Valley, was founded in 1883. The first settlers were immigrants from Poland and residents of Safed. During the War of Independence, the moshava stood steadfast against the Syrians who invaded from the east and served as a base for operations at Nebi-Yusha against an invasion from Lebanon. In 1956, after the draining of the Hula Lake, agricultural areas grew and a process of growth and development began. Immigrants from Cochin were absorbed in the community. Until the Six-Day War, the moshava suffered from Syrian shelling from the Golan Heights. The heroic history of the pioneer settlers in the Hula valley is commemorated in this medal.

Obverse:
Emblem of Yesud Ha-Maala. From it, emerges a row of buildings similar to the one represented in the emblem. Along the upper circumference, in Hebrew, the inscription "renews the Jewish settlement of the Hula Valley". Below, in Hebrew and in English along the circumference, "110th ANNIVERSARY OF YESUD HA-MAALA".
Reverse:
View of Yesud Ha-Maala with mountains and plants in the background. Below, in Hebrew, a passage from Ezra 7:9.

Tribe of Levi Medal is the eighth in series of the Twelve Tribes created by Salvador Dali in honor of the Anniversary of the State of Israel. The Tribe of Levi is depicted by the artist as a sailboat upon a red sea as a symbol of the disputed waters in Moses' blessing (Deuteronomy 33:8). The Tribe of Levi did not receive any geographical territory and had no land of its own. The body of the sailboat resembles a precious stone, symbolizing the breastplate in the Tabernacle for which the Levites were responsible. The sail suggests the Tent of Congregation. Moses and Aaron, who led the Israelites out of Egypt, were Levites. The high priesthood and leadership of the nation fell upon this tribe.

Obverse:

Tribe of "Levi" - a colored silkscreen depicting a sailboat upon a red sea. To the left of the work is the inscription "Levi" in Hebrew and English. Below, the artist's signature.
Reverse:

Dali's work "Hora around the Menorah" from his "Aliyah" series. Below, artist's name in Hebrew.

Judaism regards joy as a mitzva. Passages such as "rejoice in your holidays" and "rejoice before God" appear repeatedly in the Bible. King David danced unashamed before the Ark of the Covenant in the procession bringing it to Jerusalem. Other expressions of joy occur in the Bible: "The mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs" (Psalm 114). This medal reflects joy through nature - the sun shining in all the colors of the spectrum.

Obverse:

Sun shining in many colors, enamel on a metallic colored background.
Reverse:

Three concentric rings divided into 12 fields like the Zodiac ring. In the upper portion, the sun is depicted. In the lower portion, the word 'JOY" in Hebrew and English.

In 1995 it was 3000 years ago that King David conquered Jerusalem from the Jebusites and established the "City of David" on the ridge above the Pool of Siloam. The city was surrounded by deep valleys on three sides. Above it, to the north, was the hill upon which the Temple would be built. David turned Jerusalem into the capital of the Kingdom of Israel, concentrating all royal, political and religious authority, in a single place and person for the first time. David's son Solomon completed his father's work and built the Temple. Ruled by many nations in the course of its history, Jerusalem has stimulated the imagination of much of mankind. It remains the City of David to this day.

Obverse:

Panoramic view of old and new Jerusalem with the inscription "3000" and 'Jerusalem City of David" in Hebrew in the center, and in English and Arabic along the upper circumference.
Reverse:

Below, along the circumference, the inscription "House of David" in ancient Hebrew script from the Tel Dan Stele (9th century B.C.E.). Along the circumference, the passage "He called it the City of David" and the source "2 Samuel" in Hebrew and English.

Alexander of Macedon, known as Alexander the Great, was one of the greatest military minds of history. During his conquests, he spread Hellenistic culture to Egypt, Persia, Mesopotamia and India. When he passed through Jerusalem, his meeting with the high priest resulted in a special connection with the Jewish people. The Alexander of Macedon drachma became the most common Greek coin during that period. The adillion was designed on the basis of an Alexander of Macedon coin dated to 330 BC. It is identical in all its details to the original, with the exception of its perfectly round shape and the letter "R" (replica) at the edge of the adillion (pendant), to avoid confusion with genuine ancient coins.

The eight days of Hanukka, which begin on the 25th of Kislev, are days of joy. At the entrances of houses, lamps are lit in order to show the miracle of the flask of oil. During the Second Temple period, when Hellenistic kings issued decrees harmful to Israel, preventing them from studying Torah and performing mitzvot, and desecrated the Temple, a miracle occurred: Having achieved victory over their enemies, the Hasmoneans entered the Temple, and there found a single flask of pure oil, enough to burn for one day. This flask lasted eight days. To commemorate this, a light is added on each successive night of the holiday until all eight burn on the final day. The symbolism of victory of few over many and freedom are relevant to this day.
