The Carmelit: Opening day 6 October 1959 and today. |
||||||||||||
The Haifa Carmelit funicular subway was opened in 1959. Initially both tokens # HC-1 & # HC-2 were used simultaneously to reflect a two-zone fare system. The brass 'Hadar' token was good for a basic ride between downtown Haifa and the Hadar HaCarmel shopping area. The 'Carmel' cu-ni token was used for the ride further up Mount Carmel. When the entire city became a single fare zone, only the brass 'Hadar' token remained in use. In 1980, upon the introduction of the 'old' Sheqel currency system instead of the Lira, the 10 New Agorot coin KM-108 (a mere fraction of the cost of the fare!) could be used to activate the turnstiles. The brass 'Hadar' token was hastily recalled and the cu-ni 'Carmel' token reintroduced. In the early 1980's, an additional quantity of cu-ni tokens was minted, this time inscribed 'Carmelit' (# HC-3). The entire system was closed down in 1986 due to safety hazards. When reopened in 1992 after complete refurbishment, the token turnstiles were replaced by those accepting and cancelling paper tickets. |

The "Drom Yehuda" bus cooperative was established in 1931 through a merger of two cooperatives, "Darom" and "Yehuda". Until 1951 it operated mainly in the southern part of Israel, until it was merged with two other bus cooperatives into "Egged" which continues to operate nationwide until this day. Drom Yehuda was the only road transportation operator to have ever issued a metal token. |

The Hamkasher Jerusalem Bus Company started operating in 1931 and merged into Egged in 1967. Hamkasher bus fare tokens that were also in use as emergency small change, are roughly divided into three issues: 1st issue - # HJ-1 & HJ-2 : round design on square token, from 1942 until shortly after indpendence 2nd issue - # HJ-3 : Tower of David logo, shortly after independence until 1953 3rd issue - # HJ-4 : red star design, 1953 * The first issue tokens were strangely
denominated in Pruta/Prutot in Hebrew, and Mil/Mils in English. As the
denomination "Pruta" and "Prutot" replaced "Mil" and "Mils" in 1949 only, tokens

"Kofer Hayishuv" was an emergency taxation fund, established in 1938 for the purpose of financing security and other needs of the Jewish community ("Yishuv") in British Mandatory Palestine. The Kofer Hayishuv tax was levied on a multitude of services, for which a variety of receipts were issued, mostly in the form of paper chits or stamps. Only one metal token was issued, in 1939, which quickly became a de facto means of payment of general services, such as public transportation provided by Jewish-owned bus cooperatives. With the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, the use of Kofer Hayishuv tokens was abandoned. |

"Shekem", the Hebrew acronym for "Canteen and Cafeteria Service" was established by the Israel Defense Forces in 1948, with the specific purpose of providing free and low-cost supplies to military personnel, mainly within IDF bases and compounds. In 1950 ownership was transferred to the Ministry of Defense. During the following decades, Shekem grew into a retail giant, owning some 40 department stores under the same brand name countrywide, as well as hundreds of large trucks converted to mobile sales points. During the early 1990s the entire retail operation was privatized and sold off. Today, the IDF canteens and mobile units are operated by the non-profit Soldiers' Welfare Association, under the brand name "Sheqel". The token listed here was in also use as emergency small change during the Sinai Campaign 1956-1957. |
